The great merchant city of Anuri was one of the first cities struck by the Plague of Crimson Tears. Hundreds of travelers entered the city every day; any one of them could have borne the lethal disease into hostels, taverns, and marketplaces of Anuri. The residents panicked, attempting to halt the spread of the plague by burning the homes and business of the infected. Unfortunately, Anuri was constructed mainly of wood, dried by centuries of use, and patched with pitch, tar, and thatch. The city went up like a tinderbox. Within a few short weeks the city had been reduced to charred rubble, with only the ancient walled fort still standing.
